Sister Judy became aware of an opening for an ESL instructor through her friend Sister Fran Gorman who at the time was ministering at The Opening Word's Wyandanch site. When asked to reflect on her 14 years of experience teaching and eventually, serving as Site Coordinator in Wyandanch.
Sister Judy said the following:
"Many times over the years, I have watched the women of Wyandanch work their magic on prospective volunteers. It is very easy to fall in love with our students. Over and above that, I have been privileged to minister in this wonderful parish with three talented partner teachers, very dedicated volunteers and staff members. I am grateful to The Opening Word for this beautiful chapter in my life."
In 1997, after spending many years in elementary and secondary education, Sr Peggy became the Executive Director of Benincasa Family Services, a Sponsored Ministry of the Sisters of St. Dominic. In 2012 S. Mary Ryan, foundress of The Opening Word, asked S. Peggy if she would take over the position of Financial Director for the program.
Sr. Peggy said the following:
"I have been working for this wonderful program since September 2013. I am constantly amazed at the energy that exists at all three sites. The women are so anxious to learn. The volunteers are constantly giving time, talent and money. The teachers never stop preparing and searching for ways to help our students. It has been a tremendous pleasure and privilege to minister these last years."
In June, Sister Margaret Krajci and Sister Judith Flanagan will become members of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville Leadership Team. While we are sad they are leaving The Opening Word, we are excited about this new chapter in their lives, and thank them for the years we had together.
